I tried walking into a pachinkp parlor in Osaka once. Emphasis on "tried", because the wall of sonic force I felt when the door opened got me to turn right around and go back to the arcade instead. I have played pachinkp machines before, and I understand how people get addicted. They're so directly designed to set off as many receptors in your brain as possible to make you want to get as many "hits" as you can possibly get.

For those who do not speak Japanese, Aoi is speaking in a beautiful and traditional Kyoto style of Japanese. An example is at 4:45. Instead of agreeing to Shogo with the standard “sou desu,” she instead says “sou dosu.” This is rarely heard amongst the young people of Kyoto, but the tayu, geiko, and maiko all must speak in that manner.

(Sorry for the long comment my friend ☺️) Shogo San. I have been watching your videos for quite sometime and have have been trying to find a Martial Art to train. I came across your videos for Ichiden Ryu with Sensei Seki. However I really love the idea of Yushin Ryu which I will join online from Australia! I am coming to visit Japan for 2 weeks in Senptember with my girlfriend so Ive made sure we're visiting Tozando whilst we're in Kyoto to pick up my Iaito! My question is, Shogo, when I wish to do my online gradings, even though I will be wearing a Dōgi and Hakama, my tattoos still might be able to be seen and the last thing i wish is to offend anyone. Is there any advice you might be able to offer? Arigatō

I took Japanese for 2 full years (a total of 6 classes) in community college - I studied HARD! Also took one year of Spanish in highschool, which I only gave a half assed effort. Now over a decade later, I can still read and speak basic Spanish phrases. The Japanese I’d learned seemed to go completely out the window in less than a year without continued study. I got a rude awakening at University when I met some exchanged students and couldn’t understand ANYTHING they were saying in Japanese. They were also super excited to practice their English with me but I could barely understand them either. The languages are just too different to be mutually understood without an extreme amount of time and effort. Which most people simply don’t have. It’s unfortunate because there’s so much mutual interest between cultures, but until there’s automated translators, that divide will always be there.

Wow! Thank you for this educational video, Shogo. Until now, I had no understanding of the tradition except from two movies, I think one was either Tora Tora Tora or Bridge Over River Kwai & for sure, 47 Ronin; but you explained the tradition in depth whereas the two movies only showed the act with the only indicators being to relieve the family or clan from losing all honor and belongings - lands, titles, etc...
